Wilderness South Africa is a place outside of time, a place people go to where life slows down and is a serene place of utter calm and serenity. This means that when you book a room with 5 star Cinnamon House, you’ll be getting quite the treat in August. This is the time of year the Klein Karoo Klassique happens, which is one of the biggest all-weekend celebrations of fine living to happen anywhere in the area.
From 11 August – 14 August, the festival takes place in super close Oudtshoorn, named as the “ostrich town” – which is where you can expect to find things like orchestral concerts, recitals, as well as internationally acclaimed and award winning artists performances. The festival capitalizes on the beauty of classical music, art, food and wine – and features the breathtaking Cape Town Opera. If you’re an art lover, this is the event for you, there are everything from paintings to sculptures to view by local artists.
This event brings together the finest music and art and pairs it with internationally famous wines and food offered by regional chefs offering authentic fare between performances. This is the opportunity to taste the real food of the Klein Karoo, in a way that is pleasurable to all five senses. The event allows you to take a short drive from Wilderness to Oudtshoorn for the day’s festivities, and get away from all the people and commotion every day to return the following one.
Don’t forget that also, this is the time of the year the Southern Right Whales appear, and they can be spotted all along the West Coast as they appear to breed and play with their calves before venturing out to sea with their new larger families in December. This is the best time of year to get an up close and personal look at an iconic whale in the area, an experience that cannot be skipped while you’re here.
There are also a couple whale festivals in nearby Hermanus celebrating the giant mammals, which occur at varying times. One is the Hermanus Times Kalfiefees from 4 – 9 August, the next is the Hermanus Food and Wine Festival from 6 – 8 August, and last is the famous Hermanus Whale Festival which occurs later from 30 September to 2 October. There are far too many things going on in those festivals to list here, but a summary is: live music, local award winning wines, Afrikaans talent, gourmet foods, activities for the kids, comedy, crafts and more.
Also nearby in George, is the Nestle Ice Cream Redberry Farm Strawberry Festival, which is just as much fun as it sounds, and maybe even more so. A wonderful Spring event to welcome in the warmer weather, it happens from 1 -2 October, at the Redberry Farm on Geelhoutboom Road in Blanco, George. This is only a very short drive from Wilderness, and like the other events is very easy to get to and escape from to enjoy a luxurious night’s sleep at Cinnamon House.
The Strawberry Festival offers live music, and has a craft fair and more to do than you can even imagine. There are strawberry activities like a Berry Bike relay, strawberry eating competitions, a strawberry tour experience, and even a CrossFit title to be won. There is a play area for the kids with so much to do that you’ll have a hard time leaving with them. Some of the many features are inflatable castle fun, and mechanical rockets, enormous slides, zorb balls, target shooting, pony rides, bubble ball, face painting, bumper boats, mini-train rides, a hedge maze, and sand art.
While you’re visiting Wilderness and taking in the small town charm, don’t forget to take advantage of the nearby towns and villages who are hosting events during the time you’re here!
Be sure to book ahead and make the most of your visit to Wilderness, with photos and memories to last a lifetime.
