Wilderness, the jewel in the crown of the Garden Route, situated 15kms east of George, just off the beaten track of the N2. Whilst Wilderness is the convenient area for exploring the Garden Route, situated half way between Oudtshoorn and Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness itself offers a rich diversity of attractions. Every Friday, there is a night market, in the confines of Milkwood village, relax and listen to the live music while sipping a glass of wine under the Milkwoods or browse the stalls for snacks, drinks, art and trinkets. On some weekends there are craft markets and food stalls on Wilderness Common and at the Wilderness Lagoon, where all sorts of bits and pieces may be purchase and every Saturday, there is a farmers and craft market in Sedgefield, 15 minutes away. Wilderness Activities


Wilderness abounds with interesting activities. Take a leisurely drive along the many scenic routes, the”Map of Africa” carved out of the mountain by the river, or the “Big Tree” reputed to be 800 years old. Stroll along the rivers edge where one may catch a glimpse of Malachite Kingfisher or one of dozens of other birds from the bird hides located on the rivers and lakes. The Wilderness National Park .with 10,000ha of lake area, hosts the popular Kingfisher trail. Follow the Bush Buck or Duikers up one of many secret pathways in the forest surrounding Wilderness Village. One can also take a journey, through tunnels, along passes and waterfalls, enjoying the views of protea and fynbos, with the Outeniqua Power Train in George. A myriad of birds can be seen on one of these journeys. The more energetic may cycle back down the pass. If you are seeking and adventure holiday Wilderness is the place to be, offering Paragliding and landing on the Beach, surfing, Abseiling, horse riding, hiking waterskiing and quad bike riding. For the children there is Kidbuddie, along the Serpentine or an agricultural exploration of a dairy farm or stud farm. During the Whale season Southern Right whales can be seen along the Wilderness coast, as well as from Dolphins Point where dolphins can also be seen.
